1Israel travelled with all that he had, and came to Beersheba, and offered sacrifices to the God of his father, Isaac. 2God spoke to Israel in the visions of the night, and said, âJacob, Jacob!â
He said, âHere I am.â
3He said, âI am God, the God of your father. Donât be afraid to go down into Egypt, for there I will make of you a great nation. 4I will go down with you into Egypt. I will also surely bring you up again. Josephâs hand will close your eyes.â
1He commanded the steward of his house, saying, âFill the menâs sacks with food, as much as they can carry, and put each manâs money in his sackâs mouth. 2Put my cup, the silver cup, in the sackâs mouth of the youngest, with his grain money.â He did according to the word that Joseph had spoken. 3As soon as the morning was light, the men were sent away, they and their donkeys. 4When they had gone out of the city, and were not yet far off, Joseph said to his steward, âUp, follow after the men. When you overtake them, ask them, âWhy have you rewarded evil for good? 5Isnât this that from which my lord drinks, and by which he indeed divines? You have done evil in so doing.ââ 6He overtook them, and he spoke these words to them.
41Pharaoh said to Joseph, âBehold, I have set you over all the land of Egypt.â 42Pharaoh took off his signet ring from his hand, and put it on Josephâs hand, and arrayed him in robes of fine linen, and put a gold chain about his neck. 43He made him ride in the second chariot which he had. They cried before him, âBow the knee!â He set him over all the land of Egypt. 44Pharaoh said to Joseph, âI am Pharaoh. Without you, no man shall lift up his hand or his foot in all the land of Egypt.â 45Pharaoh called Josephâs name Zaphenath-Paneah. He gave him Asenath, the daughter of Potiphera priest of On as a wife. Joseph went out over the land of Egypt.
1Joseph was brought down to Egypt. Potiphar, an officer of Pharaohâs, the captain of the guard, an Egyptian, bought him from the hand of the Ishmaelites that had brought him down there. 2The LORD was with Joseph, and he was a prosperous man. He was in the house of his master the Egyptian. 3His master saw that the LORD was with him, and that the LORD made all that he did prosper in his hand. 4Joseph found favour in his sight. He ministered to him, and Potiphar made him overseer over his house, and all that he had he put into his hand. 5From the time that he made him overseer in his house, and over all that he had, the LORD blessed the Egyptianâs house for Josephâs sake. The LORDâs blessing was on all that he had, in the house and in the field. 6He left all that he had in Josephâs hand. He didnât concern himself with anything, except for the food which he ate.
1Jacob lived in the land of his fatherâs travels, in the land of Canaan. 2This is the history of the generations of Jacob. Joseph, being seventeen years old, was feeding the flock with his brothers. He was a boy with the sons of Bilhah and Zilpah, his fatherâs wives. Joseph brought an evil report of them to their father. 3Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age, and he made him a tunic of many colours. 4His brothers saw that their father loved him more than all his brothers, and they hated him, and couldnât speak peaceably to him.
1God said to Jacob, âArise, go up to Bethel, and live there. Make there an altar to God, who appeared to you when you fled from the face of Esau your brother.â
2Then Jacob said to his household, and to all who were with him, âPut away the foreign gods that are amongst you, purify yourselves, change your garments. 3Letâs arise, and go up to Bethel. I will make there an altar to God, who answered me in the day of my distress, and was with me on the way which I went.â
22He rose up that night, and took his two wives, and his two servants, and his eleven sons, and crossed over the ford of the Jabbok. 23He took them, and sent them over the stream, and sent over that which he had. 24Jacob was left alone, and wrestled with a man there until the breaking of the day. 25When he saw that he didnât prevail against him, the man touched the hollow of his thigh, and the hollow of Jacobâs thigh was strained as he wrestled. 26The man said, âLet me go, for the day breaks.â
1Jacob heard Labanâs sonsâ words, saying, âJacob has taken away all that was our fatherâs. He has obtained all this wealth from that which was our fatherâs.â 2Jacob saw the expression on Labanâs face, and, behold, it was not towards him as before. 3The LORD said to Jacob, âReturn to the land of your fathers, and to your relatives, and I will be with you.â
1Then Jacob went on his journey, and came to the land of the children of the east. 2He looked, and saw a well in the field, and saw three flocks of sheep lying there by it. For out of that well they watered the flocks. The stone on the wellâs mouth was large. 3There all the flocks were gathered. They rolled the stone from the wellâs mouth, and watered the sheep, and put the stone back on the wellâs mouth in its place. 4Jacob said to them, âMy relatives, where are you from?â
1When Isaac was old, and his eyes were dim, so that he could not see, he called Esau his elder son, and said to him, âMy son?â
He said to him, âHere I am.â
2He said, âSee now, I am old. I donât know the day of my death. 3Now therefore, please take your weapons, your quiver and your bow, and go out to the field, and get me venison. 4Make me savoury food, such as I love, and bring it to me, that I may eat, and that my soul may bless you before I die.â
